About
Reaching back a couple of generations, band founder Irvin Hughes has a direct link to the origins of the musical phenomenon, as his grandfather was among the first to develop the steelpan as an instrument in its own right in Antigua - at this point just making the drums out of simple biscuit tins and other bits of scrap metal. It was the arrival of WWII in the Caribbean which brought plenty of used oil drums to many islands in the Lesser Antilles, and thus the subsequent perfection of this fascinating instrument began.
Today the Niteblues Original Steel Band is organised and fronted by Harry Hughes, Irvin's direct descendant. His select group of professional steelpan exponents are invited to entertain at parties, social events and weddings, across the nation, all year round.
