History

Absolutely steeped in history, The Bear started life, not as an inn, but as a townhouse, and was built as early as the Medieval period. Various changes were made over the centuries to make the building what it is now, and some elements of this constant evolution can still be seen today, such as the 16th century fireplace that now sits behind the bar.

The cellar dates back to the 12th century, whilst most of what comprises the 'modern' hotel was added in the 1700s. From the memoirs of Christopher Bradley, we know that The Bear has been an inn since at least 1786, when he became landlord.

Although named The Bear, there is no evidence that the hotel was ever used for bear baiting. It is known, however, that the cellar once played the role of a makeshift prison for Napoleonic troops on their way to London after an unsuccessful French landing at Fishguard.

Facilities

The Bear Hotel is proud to offer use of their two dedicated function suites as the perfect setting for your special day. Both rooms are licensed to hold civil ceremonies.

The Georgian Ballroom

With its high ceilings and ornate chandeliers, the Georgian Ballroom is perfect for smaller, more intimate ceremonies of between 20 and 100 guests. Wedding breakfasts and receptions may also be held in this elegant space. With its tall French windows that flood the room with light, it's absolutely ideal for smaller weddings.

St. Quentin's Suite

Ideal for larger parties, St. Quentin's Suite can accommodate up to 200 guests for a ceremony or reception, and up to 156 for a wedding breakfast. Its location on the ground floor of the hotel gives it views over a picturesque private courtyard, and the bi-folding doors can be opened on pleasant days to give an al fresco feel to your celebrations.

Numerous menu options are on offer from The Bear's skilled chefs, and all dietary requirements can easily be catered for. They also offer three different package options to suit all budgets, and are happy to offer either buffet or sit-down meals for your guests. Drinks packages of varying tiers are also available.

With 33 guest rooms to choose from, all with their own unique décor and character, The Bear offers enough space to accommodate most, if not all of your guests overnight. The Bridal Suite is the epitome of elegance and promises to be a luxurious place for you to get ready before the wedding, and for you to spend the night after. Self-catering options are also available.
