History
Prior Park House was constructed and its grounds laid out in 1742 to a design by renowned Bath architect John Wood the Elder, famously creator of The Circus, Queen Square and other classical masterpieces, for the affluent local entrepreneur Ralph Allen.
The house was a showcase for the excellent qualities of the local golden Bath stone - "To See All Bath, and For All Bath To See".
Peter Augustine Baines purchased the mansion in 1828 and set to work creating two college wings, thereby beginning its history as an educational establishment. Today Prior Park College is a mixed Roman Catholic public school for day and boarding pupils.
